I.The Library Without Corridors
every fact is known; the relationships were never built
Picture everything humanity has written as one vast library. Medicine in one wing, physics in another; history, law, finance and literature each in its own hall, meticulously catalogued. Now notice what the library does not contain: corridors. A historian rarely reads an obscure pharmacology paper. A physicist rarely meets an observation buried in ancient poetry. No single mind has ever stood in two halls at once.

That such corridors exist is not conjecture. In the 1980s the information scientist Don Swanson examined two bodies of medical literature that had developed independently — one on dietary fish oil, the other on Raynaud's phenomenon. Neither contained an answer. Considered together, they suggested a connection nobody had recognized, one that later clinical investigation supported.1 The clues had been in plain sight: not inside any single document, but between literatures that had barely spoken.

Swanson walked his corridor by hand, one literature at a time, in a library of millions of halls. Today we are converting human knowledge into embeddings — shared computational spaces in which ideas from utterly different disciplines become comparable at scales no individual could approach. For the first time, the corridors can be searched. All of them. At once.

What is in there that nobody knows to ask about? Every prompt we type is bounded by our own imagination. We have built extraordinary machines for answering questions, and barely begun building machines that discover questions which do not yet exist.
II.The Shape of the Thing
A and B are old; the bridge is not
A is known. B is known. Nothing individually is new. But nobody has seen the bridge — and the moment it becomes visible, it implies something else. Call it X. It was never stored in A, never stored in B; possibly it was never written down in human history. Yet it becomes cleanly inferable the instant A and B are held in the same frame.

What do we call X before anyone has proven it? It is not a forgotten fact awaiting retrieval, and it is emphatically not a machine's invention promoted to truth. It is a stranger thing: an implication of what humanity already knows, that humanity has never known. There was no word for that. So one was coined.
III.The Word

It is

It is not
- retrieval of a forgotten fact
- a hallucination promoted to truth
- knowledge, until it survives scrutiny
Candidate is the operative word. Most intercognix candidates will collapse under evidence, prior-art checks and expert scrutiny — and they should. The one in a million that survives becomes something extraordinary: a discovery nobody was looking for, exposed inside humanity's own accumulated knowledge.
IV.The Practice
relevance finds the expected; surprise finds the new
How do you search for something you don't know exists? You cannot ask for the answer — no one yet knows the question. Traditional search optimizes for relevance; this hunt optimizes for productive surprise. Carry the following instruction into your next session with an advanced language model:
"Find concepts from maximally distant disciplines that occupy unexpectedly nearby semantic territory. Ignore obvious relationships. For each unexpected proximity, determine what underlying principle might explain it. Then tell me what question becomes possible only when these concepts are considered together — and what evidence would validate or falsify it."

Notice what the instruction does. It never asks the machine for an answer; it asks the machine to find something worth asking about. Don't just ask for answers. Ask what deserves a question. The corridors are unlit — and for the first time, we may be building a lantern that fits.
V.The Specimens
