Why a shortcut worn across someone else's land and a slime mould's feeding tube may be obeying the same rule about how paths turn permanent.

Here is a doctrine lawyers have lived with for centuries. Cut across a neighbour's field to reach the station. Do it openly, continuously, and without anyone's permission for the statutory period — twenty years in many jurisdictions — and the common law does something strange. The trespass becomes a right. A prescriptive easement is a permanent, legally protected right of way, and it is created by nothing but persistent unauthorised use.

The owner's title does not disappear. It simply now has a channel cut through it that they no longer have the power to close. No deed was signed, no council approved it, no payment changed hands. The path itself, walked long enough, is what generated the law. This is established doctrine, litigated in every common-law jurisdiction.
II.The Second Known Thing — the network with no plan and no brain

Now walk to a different hall of the library entirely. Physarum polycephalum, a slime mould, is a single organism with no brain, no central plan and no map. Placed on a dish, it extends an even mesh of tubes outward in every direction at once. Where a tube happens to carry more nutrient flux, it thickens; where flux runs low, the tube withers and is reabsorbed.

In a well-known experiment, food sources were laid out at the positions of the towns around Tokyo, and the mould converged on a network strikingly close to the actual rail system in total length, efficiency and resilience to severed links. Nothing decided this. Flux thickened some tubes and starved others until only the good network was left. This is well-replicated experimental biology.

IV.The Question That Becomes Possible
neither discipline would ask this alone
Here is the part that makes this an intercognix candidate rather than a nice metaphor. Cities already know where people actually walk and drive — the sensing problem is solved. What they lack is any mechanism for the formal layer to yield to that flux. Municipalities maintain infrastructure people have abandoned while the desire paths stay unpaved, because zoning changes on a political clock rather than a usage one. The mould has no such lag, and the common law, given twenty years, does not either.

If they would, then a great deal of what cities spend on roads, transit and services is the cost of a formal layer that cannot follow its own traffic — and the remedy would be procedural rather than architectural.
V.How It Could Be Proven — or Broken

A simulated dynamic-zoning testbed shows that algorithmic easements derived from sensor flux reduce traffic bottlenecks and energy consumption substantially — the threshold worth arguing about is upward of 30 per cent — against conventional zoning-board allocation on the same city.
What would break it
Continual boundary adaptation generates game-theoretic instability: a tragedy of the dynamic commons in which actors manufacture flux to capture rights, behaviour destabilises faster than the topology can settle, and civic function degrades rather than improves.
